BIOGRAPHY
Aldrich's career in choreography, improvisation, and performance has taken her to both urban and wild locations across the globe. Hallie presents dance works through various media including video, performance, and site installation. She choreographs and designs with Incite Company and teaches dance, performance composition and somatic education to dance professionals and the general public.
Hallie Aldrich graduated with a B.A. in Theater from UCLA Dept. of TFT in 1994. After working in film, she returned to Vashon Island, WA, her hometown, to study and perform physical theater and dance in Seattle, where she moved in 2001. In 2006, she relocated to San Francisco-- losing clouds, finding fog. From 1999 - 2008, Hallie performed regionally and internationally with several contemporary dance companies on the west coast: UMO Ensemble, BetterBiscuit, dropout dance, Birlibirloque, Phfft!, Karl Frost/Axlotl, and Scott Wells & Dancers, to name a few. In 2008 Hallie moved to Urbana, Illinois to study and teach as a MFA candidate and Fellow in the Department of Dance at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. She completed her MFA in 2011, and returned to Vashon Island to complete her mobile dance pod which debuted at Bellevue Art Museum's Bellwether Project in 2016.
Aldrich started dancemaking in 1999, combining choreography with improvisation, and has presented works and commissions in Seattle, San Francisco, Canada, and France. She has received support from Vashon Allied Arts, Seattle Allied Art Foundation, Velocity Dance Center, Zellerbach Family Fund, Dancer’s Group, IMC Urbana-Champaign, and many individual contributions to her company. Her research has been published in the book Encounters with Contact, and Contact Quarterly Journal.
Aldrich started her movement specialist career in 2000. Trained in Pilates at the Pacific Northwest Ballet Conditioning Studio, she worked with all levels of ability, from principal dancer to the general public. She went on to instruct, coordinate, and consult with several Pilates studios and fitness centers in Seattle and San Francisco and opened her own studios on Vashon Island and in Seattle. After 10,000 hours of individual and small group instruction, Aldrich began to augment her instruction with methods influenced by Alexander Technique and Trager(r) Bodywork. In 2012 she completed her Trager(r) certification. Her bodywork and dance technique courses always utilize a somatic, experiential viewpoint to learn the science of movement and the sustainable artistry that it can provide.
